Jakes Gerwel Fellowship Program

The Jakes Gerwel fellowship is offering students a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF) for the  2024 academic year. The students entering their post-graduation in any of the following universities are eligible to apply:



  • The University of Cape Town

  • The University of Western Cape

  • The University of Johannesburg

  • The University of Pretoria

  • The University of Witwatersrand.

The bursary offers the following benefits:

  • Cost of tuition for Post-graduation Certificate in Education.

  • Cost of residence.A monthly stipend. A laptop and the cost of printing.

  • A thorough leadership program that lines up with the JGF’s pathways that help influence teachers, educational leaders, and social entrepreneurs.

  • Professional mentorship for the students through their first year of studies.

  • An assigned teacher coach for the initial two years of teaching who will offer guidance and support as the candidate learns the profession and school culture.

  • An opportunity to receive guidance from a JGF Mentor who will help the candidate with practice and help them adapt to the teaching profession.

About The Jakes Gerwel Foundation

Established in honour of the late academic, the Jakes Gerwel Foundation has been hard at work to achieve its objective of making South African society one in which human development is accessible to all. Gerwel, himself a respected academic, was deeply committed to the idea of using education to escape poverty.

The foundation focuses much of its attention on the arts, with programmes offering mentors to young writers, lyricists and songwriters who practice their craft in English, Afrikaans and Isixhosa. Together with PEN Afrikaans, the foundation offers a residency for Afrikaans writers. Gerwel was passionate about the language and keeping it alive in South African society.

Fellowship Requirements And Eligibility

The candidate must satisfy the eligibility criteria before applying for the fellowship. There should not be any exceptions.

  • The candidate must hold South African citizenship.

  • The candidate must not be older than 30 years at the time of application.

  • The candidate must be a graduate or should be in their final year of undergraduate studies at the time of application.

  • The candidate must have excellent records in academics.The candidate must be applicable for a PGCE course.

  • The candidate must plan on doing the PGCE in the year 2024.

  • The candidate must have applied or enrolled in any of the universities mentioned above.

  • The candidate must display enthusiasm and interest in teaching.

  • The candidate must have the aim to become a high school teacher.

  • The candidate must be committed to the JGF program.

  • The candidate must share the vision of JGF to change education in South Africa.

After checking the eligibility through the eligibility quiz, the candidate will be given further applications regarding the application process.

If you know of someone who would qualify for this fellowship, you may Nominate them. If you were nominated by someone else, you will need to complete Eligibility Quiz above.

Note: The shortlisted candidates who clear the initial stage of application will be contacted via telephone or email about the telephonic interview. After which, the selected candidates will be asked to come for the selection camp and from there, the final selection will be done for the fellowship.

Documents Required

All the mentioned documents must be submitted along with the online application. If any document is missing or false, the application will be rejected.

  • Certified copies of ID documents or residential documents.

  • Tertiary education records and transcripts.

  • Proof of registration or application at any of the universities mentioned in the article.

Closing Date

The applications will be closed on 31 July 2023. Interested candidates must submit the application before the deadline to avoid rejection.

Here are some important dates:

1 August to 31 August 2023: conduction of telephonic interviews.

15 October to 17 October 2023: selection camp.

30 November 2023: awarding of fellowships.

December 2023 to January 2024: Commencement of the fellowship.
