ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SASA

The South African Statistical Association (SASA) is a professional body that focuses on promoting the study, application, and development of statistical science in South Africa. Founded in 1953, SASA serves as a central organization for statisticians, data scientists, researchers, and educators, encouraging collaboration and the exchange of knowledge across academic, governmental, and industrial sectors.

The association provides a platform for presenting innovative research through conferences, publications, and workshops. It also promotes the growth of statistical education and practice. SASA plays a crucial role in tackling data-driven challenges and advocates for the use of statistics to support informed decision-making within South Africa and internationally.

ABOUT THE SASA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The SASA Education Committee is inviting applications for the SASA Bursary Competition for the 2025 academic year.

The bursaries will be awarded to students pursuing studies in Statistics or Mathematical Statistics (at the 3rd-year or Honour's level) and who are members of SASA (membership is free).

The selection for these bursaries will be based on two main criteria: academic excellence and financial need.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SASA BURSARY

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria in order to apply (note that failure to meet any of these requirements will result in the disqualification of the application):

  • You must be pursuing a qualification in Statistics or Mathematical Statistics.

  • You must be in your 2nd or 3rd year of study in 2024.

  • You must be progressing to 3rd year or Honour's studies in 2025.

  • You must be enrolled at a recognized South African university.

  • You must be a member of SASA or apply for SASA membership. (apply here for FREE student membership)

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SASA BURSARY

Applications must be submitted online at:
3rd year studies: SASA Bursary Application 2025
Honour's studies: SASA Bursary Application 2025
 

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documents as part of your online application (the submission of these documents is mandatory – failure to include any of these items may result in the disqualification of your application):

  • Certified copy of your ID document or passport

  • Certified copy of your full academic record

  • A motivational letter detailing your financial need (please refer to our tips on writing a motivational letter for your bursary application)

  • Proof of your parents’ or guardians’ household income

  • Proof of any outstanding student loan balance, if applicable

6 January 2025 (at 23h55).
(Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted – please apply before the closing date to ensure your application is considered.)
