About the Scholarship Provider – WAAW Foundation
The WAAW (Working to Advance Science and Technology Education for African Women) Foundation, established in 2007, is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering African women through STEM education, leadership development, and entrepreneurship training.
The Foundation delivers a range of programmes aimed at increasing female participation in science and technology, including:
- She Hacks Africa Bootcamp
- Summer STEM / Code Camp for Girls
- STEM Cell College to Secondary Outreach Programme
- STEM Fellows Training Programme
- Academic Scholarships for African College Girls
- Code School Bootcamp for Girls and Boys
- Teachers Training Programme
About the WAAW Foundation Scholarship Programme
The WAAW Foundation invites applications for its 2026 academic year scholarship programme, aimed at supporting African women pursuing undergraduate studies in STEM-related fields.
Fields of Study
The scholarship is open to students studying qualifications within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
⚠️ Please note:
- Medical and Nursing degrees are not funded
- Pharmacy studies are eligible
Scholarship Value and Selection Process
- Scholarship value: USD $500 (once-off award)
- Payment structure: Paid in two instalments
- First instalment after completion of 3 outreach activities
- Second instalment after completion of a total of 6 outreach activities
Selection Process
The selection process includes:
- Verification of eligibility
- Submission of an online application
- Shortlisting of candidates
- Request for reference letters
- Individual interviews
- Award of the scholarship
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
- Must be female
- Must be under 32 years of age
- Must be of African origin
- Must be residing and studying in an African country
- Must be enrolled in a first undergraduate Bachelor’s degree
(Postgraduate studies, MBAs, PhDs, and second degrees are not funded) - Must be studying in a STEM-related field
- Must be in 1st or 2nd year of study
(or 3rd year if enrolled in a 5-year programme) - Must be registered at a recognised university or college in Africa
- Must have a strong academic record
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must have participated in volunteering, community service, or leadership activities
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted online via the WAAW Foundation Scholarship Application Portal for 2026.
Applicants should enter “EmploymentZAR” in the section asking how they heard about the scholarship.
