🎯 Purpose of the Role

The Head of Clinical Unit: Psychiatrist leads the district mental health team in evaluating, planning, and improving mental health services across Sedibeng. Serving as a joint appointee with the University of the Witwatersrand, this role drives clinical excellence, academic training, research, and collaborative community psychiatry interventions.

📝 Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and evaluate the mental health needs and services for the district population alongside the Sedibeng District Mental Health Team.

• Develop, implement, and manage operational plans to expand mental health coverage and improve care outcomes.

• Oversee comprehensive mental health services, including prevention, treatment, protection, and promotion for care users and vulnerable groups.

• Foster collaboration across primary health care, community psychiatry, non-governmental organizations, and government sectors.

• Ensure clinical services adhere to ethical principles, professional standards, and national health guidelines.

• Lead training programs for primary care practitioners and community psychiatric staff, including community literacy outreach on suicide and substance use prevention.

• Participate in academic teaching, registrar assessments, examinations, and research as a joint appointee with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of the Witwatersrand.

✅ Job Requirements

• Master of Medicine (MMed) Degree in Psychiatry OR qualification as a Psychiatrist with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (FC Psych).

• Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist Psychiatrist.

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Specialist Psychiatrist post-HPCSA registration.

• Valid driver’s license and computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

• Advantageous: Clinical experience in community mental health services, qualitative/quantitative research capabilities, and managerial experience.

• Competencies: Strong leadership, knowledge of relevant health legislation and policies, and the ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
