About South African Veterinary Foundation (SAVF)

The South African Veterinary Foundation (SAVF) is a non-profit foundation founded in 1984 in order to raise funds for the research and awareness of a greater understanding of animals. SAVF funds veterinary research at all levels as well as bursaries and loans for veterinary studies resulting in improved quality of life for animals and people.


Some of the supported projects by the foundation include Rhino Conservation Fund, De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust, Disease Risk Assessment Training Workshop, Community Veterinary Clinics and CiplaVet and the SAVF donate books.

South African Veterinary Foundation Bursaries 2023

The South African Veterinary Foundation started financially assisting 4th and 5th-year veterinary students since 1999. Pet Memorial Fund has funded the bursaries since 2002 with a charitable contribution every year from Lakato (Pty) Ltd.

Bursaries will be awarded for studies towards a BVSc (Veterinary Science) qualification, at the University of Pretoria. SAVF bursaries only cover a small amount of the educational costs every year of veterinary science studies. There are 2 bursaries available annually with the amount of R10 000 each. Two of the bursaries are in association with Lakato Veterinary Wholesalers.

Bursary Requirements And Eligibility

  • Proven financial need

  • You must currently be studying at the University of Pretoria.

  • Students of BVSc IV and BVSc V in need of financial assistance

  • Minimum 60% average examination marks

  • Student activities participation such as sport, cultural activities, or any other aspect of student life

How To Apply And Application Details

  1. Complete the SAVF Online Application Form.

  2. Complete the 10 multiple-choice questionnaires on the SAVF

  3. Include and upload the following documents:

    • Proof of current student debt in PDF format

    • Certified copy of your academic record in PDF format

    • A brief Curriculum Vitae uploaded on SAVF web form
