🎯 Purpose of the Role

The Chief Engineer (Grade A) leads engineering governance, technical design reviews, maintenance strategies, and infrastructure project portfolios within the Directorate: Physical Resources Management. The role ensures that all school infrastructure projects comply with national engineering standards, safety regulations, and fiscal frameworks.

📝 Key Responsibilities

• Perform final reviews, approvals, and audits on new engineering designs in line with engineering theory and design principles.

• Coordinate multi-disciplinary design efforts to ensure seamless integration with modern technology and infrastructure systems.

• Establish engineering maintenance standards, specifications, and service levels to optimize operational effectiveness across departmental properties.

• Lead engineering risk management, compiling risk logs and providing technical consulting to minimize engineering and operational hazards.

• Oversee financial governance, manage operational capital project portfolios, monitor MTEF budgets, and optimize cash flow for engineering projects.

• Direct knowledge-sharing initiatives, facilitate innovative engineering proposals, and continuously protect and exchange engineering data.

• Manage human resources within the discipline, setting performance standards, managing key performance areas (KPAs), and developing technical capacity.

✅ Job Requirements

• An Engineering Qualification (B.Eng / B.Sc in Engineering) at NQF Level 7 as recognized by SAQA.

• Minimum of six (6) years’ post-qualification relevant engineering experience.

• Professional Registration: Mandatory active registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

• A valid driver’s license (except for persons with disabilities).

• Knowledge Base: National Building Standards Act (1977), Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act (1993), Government Immovable Asset Management Act (GIAMA 2007), South African Schools Act (SASA 1996), and OSD engineering frameworks.

• Skills: Engineering design auditing, capital project management, MTEF budget management, risk governance, ECSA compliance, and team leadership.
