🎯 Purpose of the Role

The Chief Works Inspector (Mechanical) oversees mechanical inspection services, plans unscheduled maintenance, drafts technical specifications, manages contractor performance, and supervises lower-level Works Inspectors within the Waterberg District (Modimolle Cost Centre).

📝 Key Responsibilities

  • Inspection & Technical Assessment: Investigate customer complaints, inspect new mechanical installations, and audit maintenance work on existing public infrastructure to guarantee compliance with OHS regulations, technical standards, and quality control.

  • Specifications & Cost Estimations: Draft technical specifications, prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQ), assemble quotation/bid documents, and develop cost proposals for minor new works and mechanical maintenance.

  • Contract Administration & Site Management: Supervise contractors on site, evaluate bids and quotations, verify invoices against completed milestones, certify progress payments, and handle variation orders or extension requests.

  • Record Keeping & Reporting: Implement and maintain electronic record-keeping systems to track active and finalized mechanical projects, compiling progress reports for departmental management.

  • Staff Supervision & PMDS: Supervise Works Inspectors, manage performance assessments (PMDS), identify technical skills gaps, and offer guidance on relevant policies and safety legislation.

  • EPWP & Resource Management: Collect and submit EPWP data, monitor proper equipment and store utilization, and track budget expenditure for mechanical works.

✅ Job Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.

  • An NQF Level 6 qualification (T/N/S streams) as recognized by SAQA in Mechanical Engineering OR N3 Certificate plus a Trade Test Certificate in Mechanical OR professional registration as a Mechanical Engineering Technician.

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ relevant post-qualification experience in a mechanical engineering or mechanical maintenance environment.

  • A valid driver’s license (except for persons with disabilities).

  • Technical Competencies: Project management, technical analysis, reading and interpreting mechanical plans/sketches, technical report writing, computer literacy, and process knowledge.

  • Generic Competencies: Problem-solving and analysis, decision-making, team leadership, financial management under PFMA, customer responsiveness, planning and organizing, and conflict management.
